Cordless Phone Security - What You Need to Know

For many years, cordless phones have provided us with the convenience and freedom to go anywhere within the phones range to talk. But with some cordless phones this freedom comes with a price. With analog cordless phones anyone with a radio scanner or baby monitor, within a mile or more from your home, can eavesdrop on your conversations. All cordless phones use a radio signal to transmit your conversation from the base station to the handset, and a slightly different radio signal to transmit it from the handset back to the base station. Older cordless phones, and even some of the least expensive newer models, use an analog radio signal to transmit your conversations. Radio scanners, baby monitors, and other wireless communication devices also use analog radio signals to transmit and receive information. To make things worse, they use the same frequency range that some cordless phones use. This makes it easy for anyone with a baby monitor, radio scanner or even some walkie-talkies to tune into your phones frequency and listen in on your conversation.
Digital cordless phones eliminate most eavesdropping.
A digital phone converts your conversation into binary code, a series of zeroes and ones, before it is transmitted from the base to the handset or from the handset to the base. Then the base or handset converts it back into the original analog signal so you can hear it or it can be sent over your phone line. Analog radio receivers used in scanners and other wireless communication devices can not convert this binary code into usable sound. Newer cordless phones also transmit between the base and handset at a higher radio frequency then can be picked up by most scanners and baby monitors. The most advanced cordless phones, DECT 6.0 phones, transmit at a radio frequency that has been dedicated exclusively for voice communication applications by the FCC. There are other features that can make your cordless phone conversations even more secure. Digital Spread Spectrum Technology, or DSS, sometimes called Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum, or FHSS, uses frequency hopping to transmit your conversation between the base and handset. The phone rapidly switches from one frequency to the next several times per second making it almost impossible for others to follow your conversation. The pattern of which frequency the base and handset will switch to next is reset each time you place the handset back on the base.
So what security features should you look for in a new cordless phone? Depending on your security needs and your budget, look for cordless phones with these security features.
2.4GHz digital phones using DSS (Digital Spread Spectrum), or FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) technology.
5.8GHz digital phones using DSS (Digital Spread Spectrum), or FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) technology.
DECT 6.0 phones. The FCC has set aside the 1.9GHz frequency range these Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication
devices use exclusively for voice communication applications.

Things to Look for When Buying a Cordless Microphone

Wireless microphones have numerous uses, from amateur to professional, from bars and clubs to educational institutions and churches. A good, reliable wireless microphone system can be an excellent addition to any of the mentioned locations, but it can also be used on stage, during a concert, a prize contest, announcing a play or for karaoke. Radio and TV stations often use such cordless microphones with great success. There are several frequency ranges in which you can get a microphone: VHF, UHF and Giga Hertz. Cordless microphones may also take shapes like hand held wireless microphones or clip-on microphones.
Advantages and potential problems of cordless microphones
When looking for a cordless microphone, one of your main concerns has to address the mobility range that the device will offer. Although the absence of a cord gives the person holding the microphone more freedom, this must also translate in the distance you can use the microphone, in relation with the wireless receiver. A good wireless microphone will allow a club DJ, for example, to leave his mixing desk and walk on the dance floor with the mic in hand, without experiencing any signal loss or quality problems. Also look for battery life specifications - it's better to get a cordless microphone that has a battery level indicator on it, so as to get early warning and not be surprised by a sudden battery failure in the middle of a speech. In fact, batteries used to be one of the biggest disadvantages of older cordless microphones: they were heavy and had a short life. Today, however, you can expect to get dozens of hours of battery life and most wireless hand held microphones are actually lightweight.
A few popular wireless microphone models
VHF performance gear microphones are the least expensive in the line of semi professional and professional microphones. They work well in a wide area, but you cannot expect extreme recording environments to produce high quality results. Such microphones are, however, suitable for 80% of all sound recording situations. Fixed frequency UHF units are another popular choice for many musicians and even for educational institutions. They come with a series of microphone types, such as cardioid, super cardioid or omni directional. Broadcast quality UHF models are usually used in award shows, TV shows and other high-end locations. They offer agile frequency responses and excellent ambient noise cancellation filters.

DECT 6.0 - Cordless Phones That Meet the Hype

You've likely heard the ballyhoo after every major cordless phone technology update. This Megahertz and that Gigahertz were all supposed to provide incredible range and amazing clarity. Well, the new-to-the-U.S. DECT cordless phone technology (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications or 1.9 GHz) really does live up to the hype. Although all DECT 6.0 cordless phones are not created equal, most DECT phone models provide a winning balance between exceptional voice clarity and suitable-to-fantastic range.
Why is DECT so special?
Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications is nothing more than a digital wireless communication technology that operates at 1.9 GHz. It's popular with manufacturers (a good thing for consumers) because it's a global standard, enabling them to produce fewer models to satisfy the needs of all countries. In general and all other technology components being equal, the lower the frequency, the longer the physical range you'll get with your cordless phone. Phones that operate at lower frequencies (remember your old 49 MHz cordless phone from 1988) are also prone to much more interference, which significantly reduces voice clarity. When manufacturers launched phones at the higher frequencies, the opposite occurred as you might expect. Voice clarity improved dramatically with digital 5.8 GHz models, but physical range became a genuine problem.....especially in all the growing number of McMansions in the U.S. Some DECT 6.0 cordless phones can get up to 1000 ft of range from the base outdoors.
Though frequency is only one feature to examine in the search for a cordless phone, a DECT 6.0 phone is the best bet in today's cordless phone market as long as all included features meet your needs. It's also dedicated to cordless communication in residential, commercial and public environments, so you're unlikely to be interfering with other home electronics. Besides premium voice quality and extended range, DECT technology is inherently more efficient with battery life. It's not uncommon to see some DECT models with up to 12 hours of talk time, which can be ideal for those who work at home.
Which DECT Phone to Select?
First and foremost, look for a global brand you can trust. Because DECT is a global standard - where launching a U.S. product is much less expensive than in the past, you'll see lots of "import brands" hitting the market. Price points vary depending on brand and features, but most DECT phones are at the same or lower cost than the 5.8 GHz phones they're succeeding. Consider your usage as well. Will you be using the phone in a home office where you'll need a headset jack? Surprisingly, only some DECT models have included a headset jack. Will you need multiple handsets? While most models are expandable, be cautious that a few are locked into the one included handset. There are many more features available, but most DECT phones handle core functionality (excellent voice quality and good range) really well. Look for reviews and comparisons online and consider asking your retailer for recommendations.

Magic Jack Internet Phone Review

Magic Jack is a newcomer to the VOIP (voice over internet protocol) family of internet phoning. It's quick to install, easy to use and the price can't be beat for making unlimited local and long distance calls in the United States and Canada. But is Magic Jack too good to be true?
Like most products, Magic Jack has it's good points and it's not-so-good points. It will be up to you to decide what is most important to you in internet phoning and to choose the product that should work best in your situation.
Magic Jack Pros
Low cost to try out. For .95 plus shipping and handling, you receive the USB device and the license to use it for unlimited local and long distance calling for one year. Each additional year is .95. There are also multi-year packages to purchase at a discount. International calls can be free if you are calling someone who also has the device. For example, if you have a family member that lives in another country, you can purchase a Magic Jack and mail it to them. Then you can call them for free and they can call anywhere in the US and Canada free. Includes many features such as voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, 411 and 911. Save on your cell phone minutes by using it to make calls from home. Uses any ordinary landline telephone, including cordless phones. Headsets and your computer microphone and speakers can also be used.Magic Jack Cons
Your computer has to be turned on to use Magic Jack. Service can be intermittent. New company with growing pains, I don't recommend relying on it for your only phone. Directory assistance, or 411 is advertising based if you call it from your phone. If clicking on the soft phone screen that lives on your desktop, you are taken to a web site to look up phone numbers. 911 is through a different system than the 911 you call from a regular telephone. When setting up your Magic Jack it will ask you the physical location of your phone in case of calling 911. Until this service is a lot more stable, I would not rely on their 911 in an emergency. Another reason for keeping your landline phone. If your internet service does not work during a power outage, you will be without this phone service also. Unless you have a cell phone that will work, this is another reason not to cancel your landline phone service. Make sure you keep a phone that doesn't use electricity on hand for emergencies. As with most or all voip services, you must have a high speed internet connection to use this service. These services include broadband, DSL, WiFi, FIOS, cable internet or WiMax. It is not recommended for use with satellite internet.
If you are interested in having a service that allows you to make free long distance calls, give Magic Jack a try. If dumping your current landline phone service is what you need, investigate the other VOIP services that are available and that have a longer track record of performance.

How to Install VoIP Internet Phone Service in Your Home

Did you know that internet phone service is so easy to install, that literally "anyone" can do it? Many people shy away from getting VoIP service because they think they are not "technical" enough to install it themselves. Nothing could be further from the truth! If you can look at pictures and follow a few simple instructions, you can install VoIP internet phone service and take advantage of the tremendous cost savings associated with this great technology!
VoIP phone service looks and feels just like traditional "land line" phone service. The difference is that instead of using the telephone company's wires, your calls are routed over the internet. If you have broadband (high speed) internet service, you can use internet phone service.
Internet phone service costs only a fraction of what regular phone service costs, which is why millions of people have already made the switch. Most VoIP plans provide you with unlimited local and long distance calling within the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico for less than a month. Some VoIP providers offer an annual "prepaid" plan that costs around 9 a year - this is the best value for the money. Most VoIP providers give you tons of free calling features like call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID, voicemail and more. Most people who switch to VoIP save an average of 0 a year on their phone bill.
How to Install VoIP Internet Phone Service
Once you have decided on a VoIP service provider (there are many to choose from), sign up for service on their website. In a week or so, you will receive a VoIP adapter (also known as an ATA) in the mail. This is the device that serves as the "brains" of your internet phone system.
When your VoIP adapter arrives, follow the easy instructions to attach it to your broadband modem/router as well as to your telephone and computer. There are no tools required, and there is no software to install. You may need a flashlight to see all the connection ports, especially if your computer and modem are located underneath a desk (as mine is).
After the cable connections are made, dial the special "activation" phone number that came with your VoIP adapter. You will need to enter an activation code, which was probably sent to you via email when you signed up for the service. Once this process is complete, you are ready to start using your VoIP phone!
How to Use Multiple Phones with Your VoIP Service
Since your VoIP adapter is designed to connect to one telephone only, an easy way to use internet phone service on all the phones in your house is to use a cordless expandable phone system. Buy a system that includes the total number of phones you want, and attach the base phone to your VoIP adapter. Then place the cordless handsets anywhere in the house you want. Since internet phone service does not rely on telephone wires, you don't need to plug the phones into wall phone jacks. All that is required is an electrical outlet to supply power to the cordless expansion phones!
How to Set Up Features on your Internet Phone Service
VoIP typically comes with a ton of free features that you can turn on or off as you wish. The easiest way to manage the way your phone works is to go to your VoIP provider's website and logon to your account. You will then have access to every feature available with your service. You can turn on caller ID, activate voicemail to email functionality, block international calling, etc... You can manage every aspect of your phone service from the web when you have VoIP service. You can also manage features from your VoIP phone by following the instructions that came with your VoIP adapter.
Keeping Your E911 Address Updated
A really important thing to remember is that VoIP uses a system called E911 for emergency calls. E911 lets emergency operators know your physical location. This information is obtained from the address you have on record at your VoIP provider. In order for E911 to accurately reflect your address, you need to be sure to update it using online account management if you move.
VoIP phone service is quick and easy to install, and the features are easily managed using the online account management access tools. Once you have your VoIP service up and running, wait a week or so before disconnecting your land line phone service. You want to make sure you are comfortable with the VoIP service and that the call quality is acceptable. If you have a problem with voice quality, ask your internet service provider to check your broadband connection. Most VoIP quality issues are related to the internet connection.

What Is the Best Cell Phone Charging Station?

A cell phone charging station is something that you need to look into today if you're interested in purchasing something that not only looks great for your office, but can charge your phones in a fancy way, you will want to highly consider this as your purchase.
Why should I get a cell phone charging station?
For starters, it's a great way to hide your cords. Think of how you're charging your phone today. You're probably looking around and you see cords either laying down from the wall, or maybe there are 5 chargers stuffed in a junk drawer. Well, with a charging station, you're going to be able to keep everything all in one place and you're going to find that it will look a lot nicer than having the cords dangling down.
What should I look for in one?
I would recommend that you get one that matches your office. Whether you want to get something that is black, or maybe a wood color, you're going to find that there is something out there for just about everyone's taste. This is really down to the personal preference.
After you find something that you like in style, make sure you read in what it does. How many things can you charge at once? What kind of things can you charge? How big is it?
Lastly, you're going to want to look into are the reviews. Charging stations haven't been around for that long and what you're going to notice is that a lot of them don't have the best reviews. Since many companies need to get the bugs worked out of them, you will want to take these reviews with a grain of salt.
What are the best brands?
With all of that being said, I would consider that you look at brands such as Belkin, Brookstone, as well as DigiPower.

I Need a Cordless Drill Or Driver, But Which One is Best For Me?

A cordless drill/driver is very important in completing most home-improvement projects around the home. Whether you're hanging curtain rods, building a deck or fence, running electrical wires, or installing shelves in a closet, you'll need to drill holes and drive screws. You've gone to Sears, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowes. They all have at least 20 different cordless drills hanging on display. How do you decide which one is best for you?
Cordless drills have changed dramatically in the last two years and the newest generation features small size, powerful motors and fast charging lithium-ion batteries. Many of today's drills are half the weight and size of the same power drill 2 years ago. Don't let your husband or father tell you otherwise, these new cordless drills will do the work you need them to do. Today's drill/drivers put enough muscle into your hand to tame even the largest jobs without wearing you out from handling them all day. Five important measures of a quality cordless drill/driver are size, torque, speed, batteries, and clutch.
Expect to pay to 0 for a quality 180 inch/lb sub compact cordless drill/driver. 0 to 0 for a quality 320 -400 inch/lb compact drill/driver and 0 and more for a quality 500 inch/lb full size cordless drill.
SIZE - The physical size of the newest cordless drills is a lot smaller than the drills of just a year ago. The new sub-compact lithium drill/drivers weigh in at 2 lbs. The equivalent nicad powered cordless drill of just two years ago weighs in at 5.2 lbs. These new drills are easier to hold and allow you to get into tight places. All the new drills have lights to help you see inside of closets and work in normal household lighting situations. In fact many of the newest drills will easily fit in your kitchen drawer.
TORQUE - When I talk about a cordless drill's power, I'm really talking about how much rotational force, or torque, it produces. I am not talking about the battery voltage. This rating, in inch-pounds will help you compare one drill to the other and decide if the drill is big enough for the tasks you want it to do. 180 inch/lbs is enough power for most drilling, screwing and repair tasks around the home, 320 inch/lbs is enough for most home construction and remodeling tasks. Only consider a higher torque full size drill if you have a lot of lag bolts to set when building a deck, holes to drill in concrete, or using a large specialty attachment like a bulb auger (for planting tulip bulbs) When you're shopping for a cordless drill, read the box or go to the manufacturer's web site and look for the torque numbers on the specification page.
SPEED - Today's new lithium powered drills will have two or more variable speed settings. Usually a 0-600 rpm (revolutions per minute) and 1-1600 rpm. The lower speed is used for drilling large holes, driving large screws and precision tasks. The higher speed is used for drilling small holes, countersinking, and setting large numbers of smaller screws. When using your drill always start on the low speed setting and only switch to the higher speed when you get used to the task and find you can work accurately with the higher speed. Don't buy a cordless drill/driver with just one speed. The one speed is usually too slow for most tasks and many times is an indication of a cheap, low quality drill.
BATTERIES AND CHARGERS - A few years ago, environmentally friendly nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries began replacing the popular nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells that powered most cordless tools. Those batteries have now been replaced with the same type of battery found in your cell phone, the lithium-ion (LiIon) battery. The new lithium-ion batteries have equal or better run time, half the weight, no memory issues, and the ability to hold a full charge for more than a year while sitting in your kitchen drawer. Prices have dropped on the lithium powered tools so much that buying a NiCad is no longer worthwhile choice. You can now purchase a good, lightweight homeowner drill with a lithium-ion battery for as little as .00.
Today's latest chargers are energy-star rated and are very efficient. The new chargers will also charge the batteries much faster than before. The newest chargers will charge a battery in 30 to 50 minutes. In most home repair projects one battery is all you need. With the new lithium batteries and chargers you can keep the battery fully charged and it will always be ready to work for you. For larger tasks, if you start a project with two fully-charged batteries, and always keep one on the charger, you'll be able to work constantly as the new chargers can "fill up" a depleted battery as fast as you can drain the one on the drill. You're probably not going to have wait for a battery unless you're driving screws nonstop. In my experience, when building outdoor furniture I use one drill for the pilot holes and one for putting in screws. The new chargers will charge batteries fast enough that I only have to keep one extra battery on charge and I can work constantly without having to wait on the charger.
The cordless drill manufactures have yet to figure out that it would be beneficial to have the battery connect to the drill the same way so you could use the batteries on more than one brand, but a few retailers have developed lines of cordless tools that all work off the same battery. One manufacture has over 35 home repair and lawn and garden tools that use the same lithium battery. I personally would not even consider buying a NiMH or NiCd battery powered cordless drill anymore. Make sure you can remove the battery from the drill. There are a few cordless drills out there that have the batteries permanently attached to drill. This does not allow you to charge a battery while using the drill. This is another sign of a cheap drill.
CLUTCH CONSISTENCY - All of the quality cordless drill/drivers will have an adjustable clutch (A set of numbers between the chuck and the body of the drill.) A clutch stops the chuck from turning when it encounters a set amount of resistance. This prevents the drill/driver from destroying the screw-head, breaking the screw, or driving it too deeply into wood. Most quality drills today have from 16 to 25 clutch settings so you can fine-tune it and set your screws to the proper depth.
